Deep tissue massage, a variant of Swedish massage which focuses on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues, benefits athletes as well as people recovering from injuries or experiencing chronic pain.
Deep tissue massage delivers direct pressure to the deepest layers of muscles and fascia (the connective tissues enveloping muscles). A massage therapist may use a combination of slowmuscle strokes and direct pressurealong the muscle’s length or across the muscle’s grains. However, for some massage therapists, deep tissue massage may mean more gentle, sustained pressure targeting the fascia.
We suggest asking your massage therapist how he/she intends to treat you before any massage—and especially any massage labeled “deep tissue.” Depending on your needs and comfort levels, you may prefer deep and direct pressure or gentle, sustained pressure.
Many people mistakenly equate deep tissue massage with pain. However, Discover Touch’s massage therapist, Serge Bogoutski, believes deep tissue “is not about pain but depth.”
The key, Serge believes, is communication: a therapist can often sense when the treatment may induce pain, yet Serge advises clients to communicate any discomfort immediately.
Deep tissue also releases lactic acid from the muscles, which may cause discomfort for up to forty-eight hours post-massage. After a deep tissue massage, we urge clients to follow the advice of LIVESTRONG.com: “Drink four 8-oz. glasses of water within 12 hours to flush the toxins from your soft tissue.” Increased hydration will significantly reduce any discomfort.
Like other forms of massage, deep tissue massage promotes circulation, relieves pain, and induces a deep state of relaxation. Deep tissue is especially effective for treating athletes or those who have suffered injuries.
Deep tissue massage is also beneficial for those suffering chronic pain or fibromyalgia. In fact, of 45,601 readers surveyed for Consumer Reports, deep tissue massage was rated as the most helpful alternative treatment for fibromyalgia and one of the most helpful treatments for back and neck pain, headaches, and osteoarthritis pain (Source).
As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, deep tissue massage can also combat stress, depression, and anxiety.
